I'll start off by saying that I do not believe in the statement "fiction does not affect reality." It does. It holds weight in our society because fiction can function as propaganda, and uphold long-held systems of oppression and discrimination. It reinforces stereotypes and can enable dangerous beliefs. It would be incredibly ignorant of me to not acknowledge the role that fiction can play in supporting systemic issues. I emphasize systemic issues because systems of oppression rely on a multitude of factors that come together to oppress living individuals.Yes, problematic things happen everyday. No, these issues would not be eradicated if every single writer decided they'd never write, again. Writing about these things in fiction do not grant living individuals permission to hurt others. We all know exploiting people is bad. We're all adults. If you're not an adult, this is your sign to go.Again, I do not condone or support problematic behavior in real life. It's fiction. And your favorite character is not being oppressed, they are a pixel on a screen and certainly not worth defending over the livelihood of a real, living author.
